Diving Services

 What procedures can be done?

Kompletely Kustom divers can perform barnacle removing, zinc (anode) replacement and propeller repair/replacement while your boat stays in the water. Let's take a look at each of these areas in more detail:

Barnacle growth (also known as Fouling)

This growth can begin in as little as just a few weeks. Fouling can create drag and reduces speed, creating extra demand on your engine and possibly increasing your fuel cost by 15-20% or more.

Having marine growth cleaned from your boat regularly will save you money on fuel and repairs. Also, having it done on a monthly basis saves the amount of time the divers need to be in the water and allows for regular monitoring of your zincs.

Zinc (also known as Anodes)

Zinc anodes prevent electrolytic corrosion due to stray currents. This sacrificial metal corrodes away while protecting fittings and gear that are much more costly to replace. They must be checked periodically and replaced about a month before they are completely eaten away.

Regular dive services will help keep a close eye on these very important anodes.

Propeller repair/replacement

Grounding happens more often than we'd like. While there is a good chance that nothing got damaged, there's also that chance that it did. Are you willing to pay the expense of having your boat hauled out of the water for a 50/50 chance? Kompletely Kustom divers can repair or replace damaged propellers right in the water.

Is it safe for the environment?

Kompletely Kustom Marine follows all guidelines and necessary procedures for in-water cleaning as defined by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Clean Marina Initiative. Our professional divers are trained to carefully follow these guidelines to ensure that our work is not harming the environment:

  • Clean gently to avoid creating a plume or cloud of paint in the water
  • On boats painted with ablative paints, clean only running gear and zinc anodes.
  • Refrain from hull cleaning for a minimum of 60 days after hard antifouling paint has been applied.
  • Always use the least abrasive material that will effectively clean the painted surfaces:
    • Soft sponges or pieces of carpet to clean marine growth
    • Soft nylon or similar material on rotary brush machines
    • More rigorous cleaning pads only as needed to remove hard growth
    • Stainless steel pads or brushes only on unpainted metal areas
  • Do not clean the entire hull if it is not dirty. Just do the waterline, running gear, and propeller.
  • Never sand, strip or chip hull paint underwater.
  • If replacing zinc anodes, recycle the old ones. All used anodes are sent to dealers for scraps.
  • Provide our customers with a copy of our standard pollution prevention procedures.

How can it save me money?

Out-of-water maintenance can be both costly and time-consuming. It requires taking time to move your boat to a haul-out facility, paying the fees for the service, and then even more time to return your boat from the marina. Because of this, your boat, most likely, will not be cleaned as often as it should. This could result in quite a bit of marine growth build-up, slowing your boat down and possibly increasing your fuel consumption by 15% - 20% or more. Also, by not keeping an eye on your zincs regularly, they could be corroded away resulting in damage to the more expensive parts such as props, trim tabs, rudders, shafts and engines, costing you more money than simply replacing the zincs as needed.

 What are the advantages?

Regular cleaning of your boat with Kompletely Kustom diving services will maximize your boat's performance and lengthen the time between haul-outs.

By having regular underwater maintenance performed, you will have consistent updates on your vessel, taking the guess work out of what's going on below the water line and what needs to be done. A pro-active, preventative approach to caring for your vessel will not only save you time and money - you'll also have peace-of-mind!

If your boat is at your private dock, you will not have to arrange to take it to a marina - you can have the services done right at your place. If your boat is already at the marina, it's still costly and time consuming to have it hauled out of the water.

High power pressure washing can remove much of your paint protection, depending on the type of paint you use.

The US Naval Ships' Technical Manual lists the benefits of underwater hull cleaning, including, but not limited to, energy savings, extended paint service life and corrosion control. If the US Navy knows the importance of regular underwater cleanings, why wouldn't you?
